What would be a reason to become a police officer over a sheriff?

18 Apr

I have been told the sheriff’s department has higher pay than the Police department. So why would one become a police officer when they could become a sheriff and make more money?
Now don’t take this question the wrong way. I’m just trying to understand why.
Is it that the sheriffs academy is harder, or has more requirements than the police academy?
Thank you for your reply. My age is irrelevant to this my question, and yes i don’t have much knowledge with either agency hence the question. It would have been much more helpful if you could have given me a reason why someone might choose police over sheriff or sheriff over police.
Thank you lanie!
thank you grumpy

Is this a good reason why we need border check points illegal aliens caught with $15,900 in stolen merchandise?

13 Apr

SAN CLEMENTE —- Border Patrol agents at the Interstate 5 checkpoint arrested several suspected criminals and recovered thousands of dollars in stolen clothing and drug money in two unrelated stops this week, according to a Friday U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release.

On Thursday evening, agents stopped a Dodge Caravan at the checkpoint and directed it to secondary inspection, the release says. Agents determined that its three occupants, a Mexican man and two Columbian woman, were in the country illegally.

In the van, agents found several large trash bags stuffed with clothes that still had their price tags and security tags, the release says. One of the suspects allegedly admitted that they had stolen the clothes from a Macy’s department store. The suspects and the clothes, worth about $15,900, were turned over to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

On Wednesday morning, Border Patrol agents just north of the checkpoint stopped a Nissan Altima going south, the release says. After talking to the driver, a Mexican man in the country legally, agents had a dog check the vehicle. The dog helped agents find a hidden compartment in the center console containing seven bundles of cash totaling $29,900, the release says, which appears to be connected to drugs sales.

Agents turned the man and cash over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, the release says.

can a sheriff confiscate your money for no reason & not give u a receipt ?

11 Mar

in california~San Diego county sheriffs showed up at a friends motel room, there was 4 over 18yrs of age females & my daughter & her friend are both 17 yrs old. I new she was going to be going with her friend to visit an old friend that was here for a few days visiting! Anyway~ my daughters father had sent her $400 and she had left $200 home, the deputy confiscated her cell phone and her $200 BUT didn’t give a reason why or didn’t write her a receipt for the money or cell. My daughter wasn’t arrested or detained, just basically ROBBED!This is actually the 2nd time they’ve confiscated money from her and she NEV ER got her money back the first time plus she had no proof that her money was confiscated! I thought that it was illegal for anyoneaffiliatedd with law enforcement to confiscate ANYTHING from ANYONE without giving them a receipt or something stating what was confiscated and why? Are they legally able to do this? And what can ?I do about this situation?

Has the reason been determined yet for the power outage in Riverside County on April 23rd?

03 Mar

I googled about the power outage (about 270,000 residents of Riverside County had no power for up to an hour at 5:50pm April 23rd). I had no power for about 10 minutes and the same amount of time period in Murrieta as well.

Does anyone know if any newspaper or any journalist that found out WHAT caused this to happen? Does anyone work for Southern California Edison that on on here that can fill me in?

Thanks.

Is this a fine reason to secure our border 58 alleged Mexican gang members taken in ICE raids?

01 Mar

August 30, 2007 – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 58 Mexican nationals with ties to violent street gangs in the northern and northwest suburbs this week in the largest local dragnet targeting foreign-born street gang members.
According to a release from ICE, these are the latest arrests under an ongoing national initiative called “Operation Community Shield,” in which ICE partners with other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to address the threat of transnational street gangs.

The multi-agency operation targeted foreign national gang members and gang associates in the northern and northwest suburbs, including Waukegan, Mundelein and Round Lake, the release said. All of those arrested this week are Mexican men targeted for their affiliations with violent street gangs such as the Latin Kings, Sureño-13s and Latin Lovers, among others.

Of the 58 arrested, 37 are illegal aliens and 21 are U.S. permanent residents whose previous criminal convictions render them eligible for deportation. ICE agents in Chicago have made more than 275 arrests since the Operation Community Shield was established in February 2005.

The U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and the Waukegan and Mundelein Police Departments assisted ICE in the enforcement effort, which began Sunday night and concluded Wednesday.

Among those arrested was Edgar Rodriguez-Tovar, a 23-year-old Sureño-13 member, apprehended Aug. 26 in Round Lake, the release said. He is an illegal alien from Mexico with prior convictions for aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery, the release said. He remains in ICE custody pending deportation to Mexico.

Also arrested was Mario Vargas-Hernandez at his Waukegan residence, the release said. The 34-year-old is a member of the Latin Kings with gang tattoos confirming his membership. He is illegal alien with a burglary conviction and numerous arrests for unlawfully using a weapon, possessing a firearm, battery and aggravated assault, the release said. He remains in ICE custody pending removal to Mexico.
