Requirements to become a Buffalo Police Officer?

19 Aug

I want to become a Buffalo Police Officer. I realize that just two years ago they had a big hiring push and had a lot of people take the exam, so they probably will not be offering another exam for a while. I was thinking that in the mean time I would try to become a county Deputy Sheriff and after some time try to do a lateral transfer. I know what the requirements are to become a Deputy Sheriff and I am in the process of meeting them. I just joined the reserves as security forces (military cop) and have started the process of getting my degree in criminal justice (have about 25 credits so far). What I can’t seem to find are the requirements for employment as a Buffalo police officer or how the process of doing a lateral transfer works.

If anyone could help shed some light I would greatly appreciate it.

Sheriffs Department or Police?

25 Jul

What are the differences and I understand it can vary by state, but generally?

If you are a police officer or sheriffs deputy, why did you choose to be hired by your desired choice, why not the other?

Who is more respected, generally?

Police department or sheriffs office?

28 Jun

I know the difference between the two is jurisdiction and who employs them but their has to be a difference in job description. I live in Orlando FL and around the whole city I’ve only seen about 1 or 2 police cars, but sheriff deputies are everywhere. I assume the police department mainly responds to calls and handles investigations and stings and that sort of stuff while the sheriffs office is mainly for patrol? I’m looking to join the force but don’t want to drive around handing out tickets my whole life as I know I have to start out that way anyways.

Can a police, CHP, or sheriff pull me over if i have current registration on my car?

09 Jun

im in San Bernardino County, CA & was stopped 5 times in the month of March alone!!

…yeah they are really cracking down out here. well my registration was soon to be expired, i thought i had another week…so the cop pulls me over. i was doing the speed limit, not on the phone…nothing. he tells me when he pulls me over that he can run my plates whenever he wants, wherever he wants. he was the same cop that had pulled me over 2 of the 5 times!!

it feels like he was waiting for my registration to expire, & he CLEARLY knows my car!! my real concern is this…if i have current registration & insurance can i still be stopped if im following the traffic laws? can they legally run to see what the status of my license is through the registration of my plates??

when running my plates what are the limitations as to what law enforcement can & can not do?
well maybe i didnt make myself clear…i know he had every right to pull me over when my registration had expired wether i realized it had expired or not.

my question is when registration/tags are CURRENT…im legal, have insurance & he see’s that when he runs my plates

…is he still able to pull me over, if there is no traffic code violation??

Why the Sheriffs wear the ugliest police uniforms? Few Sheriffs now wear dark blue uniform but why is that?

09 Jun

When you ask people, who looks more like a cop, LAPD or the LA county Sheriffs? People say LAPD. Is the type of uniform police wear plays a role as how see them?
The link you provided does not exist. lol

I posted a question yesterday about a police officer hitting my sons car. The sherriffs report states not his?

09 Jun

I had asked the question yesterday regarding a police officer hitting my sons car. Got copy of the sherriffs report and they are stating not the cops fault. How do you fight this. I feel this is the good old boy club at work. The police were following my son for about 3 blocks, he was turning RIGHT into our driveway, and the police officers hit him on the passenger side door, they were in the back following him. My son did make a wide turn to avoid hitting a car already parked in the driveway and another car on the street. The accident occurred in a residental area on a small street. The sherriffs report stated my son pulled into oncoming traffic. It was about 10:45 at night and my son did not use his turn signal, but according to the police dvd he did brake. Is is even possible to fight this being that it’s the city. I can’t even find a lawyer that would interested in taking on the city. We live in Texas, yep the good old boy state!

Is it easier/to get into the Police Dept or the Sheriffs Dept?

07 Jun

My girlfriend and I were having a discussion about the Police Dept and the Sheriffs Dept. She was saying she heard that it’s harder to get into the Sheriffs Dept, than the PD, that Sheriffs is stricter??? I’m wondering if both are the same to try to get into. Can anyone shed some light on this? I spoke to a friend of mine who’s a Sheriff and he told me that it’s pretty easy. Any feedback is appreciated : )
Additional info..we were discussing L.A. County

becoming a police officer with ged?

07 Jun

If you were to also have an associate’s degree in criminal justice, and already completed a police training academy, would sheriff’s offices and police departments really mind that you only have a ged instead of a diploma?

Is a 20 year old too young to be a Police Officer?

07 Jun

An off-duty sheriff’s 20 year old deputy went on a shooting rampage at a home early Sunday in northern Wisconsin, killing six people and injuring a seventh before authorities fatally shot him, officials said.

The suspect was 20 years old and worked full-time as a Forest County deputy sheriff and part-time as a Crandon police officer, Sheriff Keith Van Cleve said. He would not release the suspect’s name but said he was not working at the time of the shooting. The question everyone is asking is he an Iraqi war veteran?

Police officer to Marine officer?

07 Jun

I’m currently employed with my county sheriff department making around 40,000 a year. I’m 21 and was planning on taking a few college courses to earn an Associates Degree for advancement opportunities in my department. However I have been thinking about becoming a Marine Officer instead of continuing my police career. I would do this all online and in 4 years I would go to OCS and earn a commission. Am I making a mistake?

Which Police Baton would you prefer to carry?

07 Jun

Of the 4 main Batons available which if these would you prefer to carry.
1. The Straight wood Baton of the 1950’s.

2. The PR-24 Side Handle baton late 1960’s to Present

3. The expandable aka Tactical or ASP.

4. The expandable with side handle.

And one last question is there any reason that the LA County Sheriffs Department still uses the PR-24 for Cadet Training. Just Curious as I saw The Academy last year and noticed that they were training with the PR-24 rather than the ASP expandable Batons.
