I know the difference between the two is jurisdiction and who employs them but their has to be a difference in job description. I live in Orlando FL and around the whole city I’ve only seen about 1 or 2 police cars, but sheriff deputies are everywhere. I assume the police department mainly responds to calls and handles investigations and stings and that sort of stuff while the sheriffs office is mainly for patrol? I’m looking to join the force but don’t want to drive around handing out tickets my whole life as I know I have to start out that way anyways.

An allegation of racial profiling in the East Valley Tribune’s Pulitzer-prize-winning series on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was unsubstantiated by the sheriff’s office due to a series of memory lapses. We’ve been waiting for months for this report, the record of an internal affairs investigation against a 287(g)-trained deputy assigned to Arpaio’s human smuggling unit.
Reporter Ryan Gabrielson wrote about his experiences on the ridealong with deputies in his July 9 series, reporting that a deputy seemed to have spotted a violation that wasn’t really there. The alleged violation became the probable cause for a traffic stop of a minivan that netted eight illegal immigrants who were being smuggled into the country.

I’d like to know the difference between these 3 things. Out of all of them, I think I’d like to join the sheriff’s office. And the sheriff’s office that I looked up is really cool and has all kinds of specialized units.
I love the idea of just working with traffic. But some other ones I like are the K9 Unit and the Mounted Patrol.
Can anyone explain the Mounted Patrol though? I’m assuming that’s the one where you have a horse. What do they do exactly?

ok so I just took the lsat got a 155 with a 3.63 gpa just came out the military, and I am currently applying for law schools, im really betting on barry university in orlando fl. anyhow i want to practice criminal defense in florida, and after graduation i want to work in the district attorneys office to gain experience and see how the state prosecutes alledged offenders. So is it easy to get a job with them or is it very very competitive and also do they have veterans preference like other government jobs, just asking so I know what to expect. thanks for the advice
