What do you think Krispy Kreme fined for hiring illegal immigrants locally?

26 May

MONROE — A tip received by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office in October 2006 about employment of illegal immigrants at Monroe’s Krispy Kreme Doughnuts factory has resulted in a fine against the company.

Chief Deputy Anthony Dwyer said Wednesday, July 8, after receiving the information, some preliminary work was done by his officers, who determined the tip was viable.

“We turned the information over to ICE,” Dwyer said.

After discussions with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, the decision was made to proceed with an administrative investigation of the activity rather than a raid similar to the one that took place in August 2007 at Koch Foods in Fairfield.

Krispy Kreme agreed to pay a $40,000 fine settlement for violating immigration laws by hiring illegal immigrants at its Lawton Avenue plant, U.S. immigration police said.

ICE officials said an audit revealed the company had employed 25 unauthorized workers locally and did not have required paperwork for all workers at the plant.

“Employers have a responsibility to hire men and women who are authorized to work in the United States and fines are an important component of ensuring their compliance,” Brian Moskowitz, special agent in charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in Michigan and Ohio, stated in a news release. “ICE will use the legal tools at its disposal to address those who neglect or falter in their corporate responsibilities.”

Part of the settlement requires Krispy Kreme to revise its immigration compliance program, and it has agreed to begin implementing new procedures to prevent future violations, ICE said.

In September 2007, ICE issued a notice of Intent to Fine Krispy Kreme. The fine was settled Friday, according to ICE.

“Krispy Kreme has cooperated fully with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials since the audit of our commissary location in Monroe, Ohio, occurred in 2007,” said Brian Little, director of corporate communications for Krispy Kreme. “Krispy Kreme is committed to complying with all laws and regulations in the communities where we do business.”

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones, said he is satisfied with the outcome, but noted the action many not have been fast enough for his liking.

“It is the very first time a company in this area has agreed to pay a fine,” Jones said, adding it will send a message to other companies.

What do you think Illegal immigrants a financial burden on Michigan ?

16 May

For several months now, alarm bells in Lansing have been ringing uncontrollably as we are warned of the state’s impending financial collapse should we fail to balance our budget and keep the cost of doing state business down.

Unfortunately, many in Lansing are only willing to pay lip service to the problem rather than finding solutions to it. I choose to focus on the concerns of the taxpayers from the 74th district and their agenda, rather than the Lansing agenda of raising taxes and partisan bickering. For this reason, I am happy to join other Republicans in support of the Taxpayer’s Agenda. An important part of this Taxpayer’s Agenda is the creation of several task forces to address the issues that many in Lansing choose to neglect.

I am excited to be a member of the Border Security and Immigration Reform, which focuses on homeland security and seeks ways to limit the negative impact that illegal immigration has on Michigan’s economy.

Taxpayer dollars are being used to subsidize illegal aliens in this state, and state programs are the vehicle that allows this. Medicaid costs have been increasing by millions annually, and the last thing we need is the added cost of care for people who should not be here in the first place.

Other Midwest states have gone to a system where a Medicaid applicant must prove their citizenship before receiving assistance. After doing so, those states have seen a 5 percent reduction in Medicaid expenditures. If Michigan were to implement a similar program and achieve similar results, we could see a drastic decrease in Medicaid spending totaling roughly $125 million.

Illegal immigrants who go to hospitals for emergency care rarely have the means to pay for their care. However, due to current laws, hospitals are not allowed to deny treatment based on inability to pay. As a result, the hospitals must count this “free” care as a loss, therefore passing the cost of this care onto other paying customers.

Spectrum Health incurred charges of more than $700,000 last year alone on illegal immigrant health care, and they expect that figure to increase this year.

Michigan’s employment environment is also polluted with illegal immigrants. In fact, there have been several instances in which new projects have been hijacked by illegal immigrant workers. In the Thumb area of Michigan, the Harvest Wind Farm project so highly touted by Gov. Jennifer Granholm was being staffed by a contractor who hires not only out of state workers, but employs illegal immigrants as well.

After first chiding the Republicans for forming the Immigration and Homeland Security Task Force, the Democrats have recently introduced legislation embracing some of our ideas. However, their half-hearted attempts don’t stand up under scrutiny.

Although they say they want to punish employers who hire illegals, they would only do so by canceling state contracts with these companies and requiring them to pay back incentives. No other punitive action would be taken. This is unacceptable.

The latest task force hearing held in Jenison focused on homeland security threats that Michigan is now plagued with because of illegal immigration. Testimony included representatives from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Ottawa County Sheriffs, 9/11 families for a more secure America; and Jon DeWitte from Congressman Peter Hoekstra’s office.

The discussion centered on of law enforcement personnel, security officials and other concerned community members. We were successful in our mission to conduct a frank discussion in ways that we can end the unnecessary burden of illegal immigrants on our state.

As my colleagues and I travel the state we look forward to hearing ideas from a diverse background.

Are people with jobs a threat to our safety (illegal immigrants)?

01 Apr

I keep hearing about Phoenix’s Sheriff doing work raids and arresting people who are not illegals, but has he ever caught drug/human smugglers? Aren’t they the ones posing a threat and not the people with jobs?

Should illegal immigrants be able to sue Americans/American companies and get big settlements?

30 Mar

This is absolutely CRAZY! Why do illegal immigrants have any rights in this country if they are here by their own choosing? Something is seriously wrong with our justice system and our immigration policies.
Here are a few (and there are too many to note) examples of this egregiousness.

6/19/2009 – All three were in construction but working on different projects.

An illegal immigrant from Mexico was scalded over large portions of his body by an exploding pipe at a Wall Street construction site and settled his case for $2.5 million.

A second undocumented Mexican worker suffered severe injuries to his left foot and other parts of his body when a beam fell on his lower body at a building site in Manhattan. The worker settled his case for $750,000.

The third worker, from Ecuador, was injured at a construction site in Queens when three 44×10-foot trusses, each weighing 200 pounds, fell on him. He suffered a fractured hip and other injuries. His settlement is for $600,000.

2008 – Lawmakers in one of California’s largest counties have secretly approved awarding an illegal immigrant child molester more than $4 million because he was beaten by fellow inmates while in custody.

2007 – A damage lawsuit brought by two illegal aliens injured by shell fragments when Deputy Gilmer Hernandez shot at the tires of the van in which they escaped from a routine traffic stop has been settled for $100,000, but the sheriff is unhappy any payment was made

2005 – Federal prosecutors and immigration officials announced yesterday that Wal-Mart Stores had agreed to pay a record $11 million to settle accusations that it used hundreds of illegal immigrants to clean its stores.

1996 – Lawyers for Enrique Funes Flores, whose beating by Riverside deputies after a high-speed chase that ended in South El Monte was captured on videotape and generated international attention, said his treatment at the hands of the officers amounted to torture.

“The penalty for entering the United States without inspection is deportation,” said Peter Schey, lead attorney for Funes. “It is not a savage beating on the side of the highway.”
They were awarded over $300,000

Should Americans be snitching on illegal immigrants?

Border Patrol catches 22 Mexicans on North County beach
2 suspected smugglers arrested in boat off coast

ENCINITAS, Calif. – Authorities arrested two Mexican men on suspicion of smuggling 22 illegal immigrants by boat and dropping them off at a beach in North County.

San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies and Border Patrol agents went to Swami’s Beach in Encinitas early Tuesday after receiving reports of people getting off a 30-foot boat. Authorities found 16 men and six women scattered in nearby brush and took them into custody.

Agents also stopped the boat about five miles west of the coastline and arrested two men for investigation of human smuggling.

Border Patrol spokesman Jerry Conlin said the people found on the beach were Mexican nationals. They will be processed at a booking center and returned to Mexico.

Do sheriff departments in Border States have any jurisdiction in the arrest of illegal immigrants?

10 Mar

I live in Arizona, and Maricopa County Sheriff Arpio or however you spell it is cracking down on Illegal immigrants. I don’t think this is right because he is a sheriff, not a immigration officer. My dad is border patrol and thats his job, not a sheriff that has enough trouble handling crimes in his county. And the dude likes men in pink underwear, there has got to be something wrong with that.
I don’t want youtube videos, i want your opinions

Illegal Immigrants and Drug Controversy?

02 Mar

Authorities had spotted the pot farms in Los Padres National Forest about eight miles from Rose Valley north of Ojai about three

weeks ago. On Wednesday, they seized 7,514 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of more than $15 million, said Sgt.

Mike Horne of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department’s Narcotics Unit. Illegal immigrants from Mexico are allegedly responsible

for planting marijuana crops in this U.S. National Park in order to avoid having to smuggle the drugs across the border and sell

them in the U.S. http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2008/jul/31/pot-plants-seized-burned/.

On June 15th 2009, on his CNN show, AC 360, ”Anderson Cooper” reported on this issue as a national security threat to the United

States. He reports, “also, inside a corner of the national parks you have probably never seen before, where Mexican drug lords

have illegal immigrants hard at work growing marijuana. That’s right, foreign drug lords, illegal immigrants, heavily armed drug

compounds right in America’s national parks.”

What do people think about this letter to the editor over illegals? Not all illegal immigrants are hard-working?

Guy W. Farmer: Not all illegal immigrants are hard-working

http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20090621/NEWS/906209947/1029/NONE&parentprofile=1061

The next time someone accuses me of being too tough on illegal immigrants I’m going to refer them to Martha Angulo, the mother of 17-year-old Rene Angulo, who was shot to death in Washoe Valley on Mother’s Day eve by “undocumented worker” Steven Contreras (aka Victor Rodriguez), 24, an admitted gang-banger and suspected drug trafficker.

Mrs. Angulo, who has lived in Carson City for many years, might have an opinion about leniency for criminal illegals in the Nevada court system. That’s because Contreras was convicted of being an accessory to murder in 2005 in a local gang-related shooting. He was deported but immediately violated probation by sneaking back into the United States.

Contreras is in the Washoe County Jail on charges of murdering Angulo and wounding good Samaritan Wayne Nash, 51, of Carson City, in a bizarre incident on Highway 395 in Washoe Valley last month. According to police, Angulo was driving to Reno but at some point Contreras came into the car. Contreras then shot the local teenager to death and wounded Nash, who had stopped to assist Angulo. Contreras fled in Angulo’s vehicle but was apprehended on Old 395 shortly thereafter, naked and hiding along the roadside.

In an interview with Nevada Appeal police reporter F.T. Norton, Mrs. Angulo said Rene was a “good kid, a good son (and) a good brother. My son wasn’t in trouble. I should know. I’m his mother.” She and other family members insist that Rene had no ties to local gangs.

Contreras claimed that he blacked out just before firing a bullet into Angulo’s head, and told investigators that earlier the same day he had “shot at a gorilla” in his Carson City hotel room. Good luck with that story. Police believe that Contreras may be involved with another suspected drug trafficker/illegal immigrant, Jaime Lopez, 20, who led Carson City sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase three days after the Angulo murder. Lopez is currently jailed here on five felony charges.

The point of this column is to remind illegal immigration advocates that they’re making a mistake when they claim that all illegals are honest, hard-working people who merely seek to improve their lives. Unfortunately, a small minority of them are dangerous criminals who should be captured and deported forthwith. Also, local judges should stop giving probation to defendants who use weapons to commit crimes.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is waiting for the right moment to revive so-called “comprehensive immigration reform,” which would grant conditional amnesty to millions of illegals. Obama is biding his time on this controversial issue while reiterating his support for immigration reform. We’ll be watching.

• Guy W. Farmer, of Carson City, lived and worked in Latin America for more than 20 years.
