DHS Chief Napolitano: Illegal Immigration Is Not a Crime

Wednesday, April 22, 2009 11:26 AM

By: Jim Meyers

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano stunned many listeners during an appearance on CNN when she asserted that illegal immigration is really not a crime.

In an interview with CNN’s John King last week, Napolitano discussed Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz., a strict enforcer of immigration laws who says he wants illegal aliens to be prosecuted and jailed.

King said: “A lot of Democrats in Congress want you to investigate him. They think he is over the line. He says he is just enforcing the law and the problem is the federal government.”

Napolitano responded: “Sheriff Joe … knows that there aren’t enough law enforcement officers, courtrooms or jail cells in the world to do what he is saying.

“What we have to do is target the real evil-doers in this business, the employers who consistently hire illegal labor, the human traffickers who are exploiting human misery.

“And yes, when we find illegal workers, yes, appropriate action, some of which is criminal, most of that is civil, because crossing the border is not a crime per se. It is civil. But anyway, going after those as well.”

The fact is, crossing the border without authorization is a crime. The statute reads: “Any alien who enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers . . . shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both.”

What do you think here Sheriff Joe Arpaio W. Valley crime sweep results in 15 arrests?

29 May

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio launched his latest crime-suppression operation by visiting the West Valley on Thursday.

Arpaio said the operation netted 15 arrests, including 10 suspected illegal immigrants. Three of the arrests were on drug-related warrants, Arpaio said.

The operation, which included 200 posse volunteers and deputies, will continue through today. It was targeting all criminal activity and focusing on drugs, illegal immigration and human smuggling in and around Avondale, the sheriff said at a designated command post at an Avondale substation.

Twenty-one drophouses have been found in the area and 245 arrests have been made during traffic stops in relation to human smuggling, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.

The Thursday operation drew a crowd of nearly 60 protesters, holding signs and shouting “Sheriff Joe has got to go” and “You’re not my sheriff, Joe.”

Protesters made little mention of the operation itself, instead targeting allegations of racial profiling by sheriff’s deputies.

“I’m here to stand up and bring to light some of the social ills that (Arpaio) is creating,” said Adolfo Maldonado, a Phoenix resident.

Maldonado added that he believes the West Valley had been targeted by the sheriff due to its larger Latino population.

A small crowd of Arpaio supporters stood near the protesters, waving flags and holding “We support Sheriff Joe” signs.

Phoenix resident and Arpaio supporter Michael Duhaime said he came to show support for an elected official.

He added that he supports the sheriff’s crime-suppression operations.

“I think it’s just the sheriff doing his job,” Duhaime said.

The operation was the ninth of its kind in the Valley.

Past operations have drawn criticism from the public, elected officials and other police agencies, but Arpaio said the operations would continue.

“We’re not going to stop doing this even if people don’t like it,” Arpaio said.

Arpaio said the Avondale Police Department was notified Thursday morning of the operation.

What do you think about the Hispanic teen that was assaulted in HOUSTON, TX? Was this a hate Crime?

02 May

Prosecutors won’t immediately seek hate-crime charges against two white teens accused of brutally beating and sodomizing a 16-year-old Hispanic boy, who was clinging to life after being left for dead, authorities said. The two attacked the boy after he tried to kiss a 12-year-old girl at an unsupervised house party Saturday night in suburban Spring, authorities said. The attackers apparently were offended at the age difference between the victim and the girl and shouted racial slurs at him during the 10- to 15-minute attack, investigators said. Authorities said the two dragged the boy from the party and into the yard, where they sodomized him with a plastic pipe from a patio table umbrella and poured bleach on him. “After they got him down on the ground, they stomped his head with (steel-toed) boots,” Harris County Sheriff’s Lt. John Denholm said. “They actually kicked the pipe further into him with the boots.” At one point, the teens tried to carve something on the boy’s chest.

What can I do, Sheriff’s Dept. did not & will not investigate crime scene. They assumed, ruled, & closed case?

08 Apr

The incident happened 6/16/07 in a very small Texas town (pop. 3000) about 2 hrs SW of the DFW area, inside my dads house. There was only 2 people involved, no other witnesses saw what happened. The lady was shot in the right arm and lived, my dad died of a contact wound to the right side of the head. They ruled it assault/suicide. BUT, they did not fingerprint the gun, no forensics, no ballistics, no verification, no GSR test on the lady, the GSR test on my dad came back negative. I have done my own investigating and found a lot of questionable things. The ladies story of what happened holds lies and has changed as she told it to different people. I’ve taken all my findings to the Sheriff’s Dept and to the DA, they refuse to investigate. They say There is not enough solid evidence to warrant a re-investigation. This is my point….there isn’t “solid” evidence “proving” what happened because the Sheriff’s Dept. failed to do their job. They don’t even have proof to back the ruling. So, my family is left wondering…was this suicide or homocide? They did not rule out any other possibilities. The DAs office says they have to look at the probables, not the possibles. Well, I think it is total BS and I refuse to just sit back and accept it. I’ve been told that a Sheriff’s Dept answers to no one, except their citizens and they are immune from being sued. This can’t be true…that would be saying that a Sheriff’s Dept. could do whatever they want and get away with it. And I have seen cases and stories on the web of people suing Sheriff’s depts. So what gives here? What else can I do? I can’t afford to hire a private investigator or an attorney. I need help from someone who still cares more about truth and justice, rather than money. Are there any professional investigators, lawyers, law enforcement or citizens willing and able to help me seek the truth and find closure with this case. I am open to any suggestions, Thank You

crime fighting careers??…(10 points)?

01 Apr

I was wondering what were some crime fighting careers similar to what Batman does. How could I fight crime like batman in the real world? or like Ethan Hunt from the Mission Impossible movies. I obviously know that they are fictitious characters, so my point is what are some similar real world jobs that I could do because I am very interested in that sort of things. (dont say a policeman or sheriff, I want more interesting things) Thanks ;)

Illegals will not be subject to immigration screening in Houston no matter what the crime can houston even?

11 Mar

The Houston Police Department will not participate in a controversial immigration screening program, federal officials said on Friday, ending a months-long saga over the city’s plans.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials had designated this week as the national deadline for agencies to sign recently revamped agreements in order to participate in the federal government’s 287(g) program, which deputizes local law enforcement to act as immigration agents.

On Friday, ICE officials released a list of the 55 agencies that had signed formal agreements with ICE. A dozen agencies, including the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, had reached agreements with ICE, but still were awaiting approval from their governing bodies to sign off on the partnerships.

HPD was on a short list of a half-dozen agencies that either withdrew from negotiations or did not re-sign agreements with ICE, according to ICE officials. Carl Rusnok, an ICE spokesman, said on Friday that HPD had voluntarily withdrawn from 287(g), “as the program did not correlate with their specific law enforcement needs.”
Frank Michel, spokesman for Mayor Bill White, said he was unaware that ICE’s announcement was coming Friday. He said the city had not officially “withdrawn” from negotiations and never heard back from ICE on the city’s proposed changes to the standard agreement.

But the mayor has distanced himself publicly from 287(g) recently, saying negotiations with ICE had stalled and the program was not tailored to suit Houston’s needs.

This spring, after a Houston police officer was critically injured in a shooting by an illegal immigrant, White formally requested that Homeland Security officials expedite his request that the city participate in 287(g).

ICE announced in July that HPD was accepted to the program. But the city and ICE became deadlocked over a range of issues related to the program, from how it should be administered to which agency should shoulder the costs. Houston had wanted only serious criminals targeted, city officials said.

White, who is running for the U.S. Senate, earlier this month said ICE officials were “bureaucratic” in the negotiations, and appeared to be shying away from the program. White said he would prefer the city participate in another ICE program, called Secure Communities, which gives local law enforcement access to a massive immigration database to check suspects’ immigration history.

Michel said Friday the city was still interested in the Secure Communities program.

ICE’s announcement met with a mixed local reaction.

“I’m severely disappointed,” said Curtis Collier, the head of the Spring-based organization U.S. Border Watch. “The city was never really enthused about participating anyway.”

Cesar Espinosa, a Houston immigrant advocate who has organized protests against the program, said the announcement Friday “shows the fruit of the labor we’ve been doing for the past year or so, in terms of getting HPD not to sign onto 287(g).”

“To us, it’s only a confirmation of the fact that HPD and Mayor White have retracted their willingness to participate in the flawed 287(g) program,” Espinosa said.

But he said he was concerned that the Harris County Sheriff’s Office is still on the list of agencies working toward formal approval, saying “we’re mindful that the struggle at the county level is still very much alive.”

Illegals will not be subject to immigration screening in Houston no matter what the crime is, so if an illegal is wanted for a serious crime Houston cannot run any kind of background check on them at all ?

What do U think 200 deputies hit Southeast Valley for crime suppression Sheriff Joe Arpaio promised zero toler?

08 Mar

CHANDLER, AZ — Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio promised “zero tolerance law enforcement” as he began his 10th crime suppression operation Thursday afternoon.

Arpaio said the operation is aimed at deterring both crime and undocumented immigration.

Approximatedly 200 deputies and volunteer posse members converged on the Southeast Valley communities of Chandler, Queen Creek, Mesa and certain areas of Phoenix.

According to Arpaio, the primary objective of his crime suppression operation is to conduct criminal, traffic and human smuggleing enforcement.

He said at no time will any vehicle be stopped solely because of the race of the occupants inside that vehicle and racial profiling is strictly prohibited.

Arpaio is currently under investigation by federal authorities who are investigating claims of civil rights violations during the crime suppression operations.

In a news release, Arpaio said “Chandler has had a recent spike in crime. In addition to that face, my deputies and officials from ICE (Immigration & Customers Enforcement) have raided several illegal alien drop houses in the area and made numerous human smuggling arrests.”

Pinal County deputies are helping with the 3-day sweep.

Some are calling the operation a farewell party for Mesa Police Chief George Gascon, who has always been a vocal critic of Arpaio’s law enforcement strategies.

Thursday was Gascon’s last full day on the job. He leaves Friday for a new job as the top cop in San Francisco. http://www.abc15.com/content/news/southeastvalley/chandler/story/200-deputies-hit-Southeast-Valley-for-crime/tWvHPMmhTUWYT9TM5aI4YA.cspx

Why do they still keep insisting that identity theft by illegals is a victimless crime?

04 Mar

I understand what these illegal alien advocates think they are doing even though I do not agree with it, but how can they think crimes like this are okay and should be forgiven?

Why do they think they should not be prosecuted for identity theft or having fraudulent documents?

Do not use the excuse as they don’t know what they are doing is illegal. They know they entered illegally and everything from then on is illegal. Who would believe that buying something like an I.D or S.S number is legal?

Lake Co. sheriff: Arrest shows ‘devastation’ of illegal immigrant crime
By Tony Gordon | Daily Herald Staff
Published: 1/12/2010 12:53 PM | Updated: 1/12/2010 5:27 PMLake County Sheriff Mark Curran said the recent arrest of a Franklin Park man is another example of the havoc wrought by illegal aliens who commit crimes.

Sergio Uscanga, 26, is charged with identity theft and forgery for using the financial information of a Lake Villa Township man to work for four years.

Curran said Uscanga, who entered this country from Mexico, purchased the name and Social Security number of the 39-year-old victim.

Uscanga used the information to apply for a job at Banner Service Co. in Carpentersville, Curran said, and was hired Sept. 12, 2005.

This past December, Curran said, the victim received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service saying he owed taxes on the wages he had been paid from the job.

The man called police, and Curran said sheriff’s detectives tracked down Uscanga and arrested him Sunday morning.

“This case is another example of the devastation criminals who are in this country illegally can cause,” Curran said. “This victim will now have to spend months getting his credit straightened out and dealing with an IRS bill he does not owe.”

Curran, who has repeatedly called for harsh punishment and expedited deportation of illegal aliens who commit crimes, said it is estimated up to 50 percent of people in this country illegally have stolen identity information.

Uscanga, who is held on $50,000 bond, faces up to five years in prison if convicted and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 2.
As Debra said, all they have to claim is they did not know. Advocates claim they are doing this only to work and should not be prosecuted.
apache, they would use fake and stolen identities to get these license, how would that help.
No I blocked tony before, but it does no good because of HIS many accounts. I have One account, I need no more, thanks for asking.

Man accused in rat strangling charged with animal cruelty

PATRICIO G. BALONA
Staff Writer

DELAND — A DeLand man who strangled a white pet rat in a fight over a cigarette is now charged in the rodent’s death, a sheriff’s spokesman said this afternoon.

Darren Daniels, 22, was charged with felony animal cruelty today, said sheriff spokesman Gary Davidson. The charge is in addition to battery and fleeing and eluding charges for which Daniels is still being held in the Volusia County Branch Jail on $3,000 bail, a booking officer said.

The animal cruelty charge complaint was served to Daniels in jail today and carries a $5,000 bail, Davidson said.

According to sheriff’s deputies, Daniels was enraged on Oct. 9 because his wife took his last cigarette, so he strangled a pet rat to death then refused to stop for deputies who used stop sticks to flatten his car’s tires.

Daniels also grabbed his 20-year-old wife, Kaela Daniels, in the upper chest during the confrontation and would not let go, officials said. The wife escaped Daniels’ clutches, deputies said, and ran. She crawled under a fence into some bushes near her apartment complex where she hid for an hour.

Kaela Daniels told deputies that her husband grabbed a white rat from their aquarium, smashed its head against the tank and then strangled it to death.

Responding deputies found two other large white rats, an aquarium with snakes and lizards and a large python curled up in a ball on the bedroom floor, a sheriff’s report said. www.news-journal.com
Brainz, it’s in today’s Daytona Beach News Journal.
Edit: Charity, the rat was there obviously as food for the python on the floor. The python would have strangled the rat anyway. Why not charge the snake with animal cruelty?

Should you be charged with a crime if you find a naked man in your daughter’s room and you hit and chase him?

26 Feb

I don’t think it should be illegal to use whatever is necessary to remove a naked stranger from your daughter’s bedroom.

“A Deltona father ended up in jail Thursday after finding his daughter’s teenage boyfriend naked in the girl’s bedroom and hitting him with a pipe, sheriff’s officials said.

Raul Colon, 45, didn’t even know his daughter had a boyfriend — or that the youngster had been sneaking into the home for more than a year. So when he heard noises coming from his daughter’s room early Thursday and saw a naked stranger standing on the girl’s bed, he swung a metal pipe he had taken from the garage, hitting the 15-year-old, according to a Volusia County sheriff’s report.

Colon was charged with aggravated battery on a child but was released from jail later Thursday on $10,000 bail, a booking officer said. No one answered the phone at Colon’s residence Thursday for comment.

According to the report, Colon heard the noise in his daughter’s room when he got up at 4 a.m. to let his dog out, as he does every morning.

Colon told deputies he chased Lucas Contreres through the kitchen, living room and through the front door and out into the street and called 9-1-1.

Colon’s daughter later told deputies she had been seeing Contreres for 18 months but did not tell her father about the relationship. Contreres had sneaked in through a bedroom window at 3 a.m. Thursday to have sex with her, the 15-year-old girl told deputies.

Contreres was found at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City where he received staples to close cuts on his head. His injuries were not life-threatening, deputies said.

Contreres told deputies a similar account to Colon’s. He said Colon came into the room and started swinging at him with the metal pipe. He jumped out of the bed and began running through the home to get away from Colon. Once outside, he jumped on his bike and went home. His sister later took him to the hospital, deputies said.

Although Contreres’ father said he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to press charges, deputies took Colon to jail anyway.”
