Should I report to the police or sheriff someone messing up my car’s tire so that I can’t drive?

03 May

Some mexican guy slashed one of my rear tires of the car, but I have no evidence… but I know it’s him because he was angry at me that I didn’t let him in my apartment after knocking my door 10 times a day for 5 days non stop. Basically he said he wanted to sleep in my apartment cuz his mom told him to get a place.

What can I tell the police or the sheriff.. and are they gonna help me or just tell me “i’m sorry u have no evidence”

File a report. The police are going to tell you they can’t help you because they don’t have any evidence but at least if something happens down the road you made an effort to handle things properly. Don’t give into this guys efforts to get into your place. If he shows up tell him you are not interested in hanging out with him. If his own mother doesn’t want him around he has acted up before this incident.

Unless you or someone else sees him do it you’ve pretty much got no case. Years back I knew a girl who’s ex boyfriend pulled that on her a couple times. The cops pretty much said the same thing.

We had the same thing happen to my brother’s blazer. He had some old friends he turned in for stealing stuff from our place for the 9th time (yes 9th… they mounted the stuff they stole from me to the outside of their truck and drove it on over to our place just days later, so i called the cops and got their truck impounded) and so obviously they were mad at him and had motive to retaliate.

A few days later, my brother gets out of school to find his blazer sitting on four flat tires. Now if he hadn’t notice, had jumped in and began driving unaware of the flat tires (hey, he’s stupid like that, look at his choice of friends) then took a corner and had it lose control, it could’ve hypothetically killed him. So that’s attempted murder in my mind. Disagree? Sure and i’ll bet if they cut his brakes that wouldn’t count either?

Even with the guy having a clear motivation, and being placed at the scene (they went to the same school), and having the knowledge of cars to take out the valve stem rather than slash a tire (for his sake to dodge vandalance charges, as he only disassembled things, not destroyed). Clear and simple, it was that guy that did it, or at the least, somebody doing it on his behalf. But you know what? They told us that unless we could find a fingerprint on the valve stem’s removed valves (slightly bigger than a grain of rice) or had a true eye witness, there was absolutely nothing we could do! Two days later $800 of stereo equipment was stolen out of my brother’s truck while it was parked at our house (in rural country, not just parked on a city street, so invisible to any nearby roads or random traffic, so any thefts from us would be very obviously by somebody who knew us) and once again, they couldn’t find any fingerprints and despite the guys bragging over text messages to my brother that they had stolen it, they were still “unable to find hard evidence” to even charge them with a crime, let alone win a case against them.

So what has been my solution? Well, i bought myself a Chinese SKS assault rifle with a 50-round magazine, loaded it up with hollow points, and leave it locked and loaded in the front closet for me to welcome any visitors with. Or a .357 revolver if i don’t think they’re likely armed. Just last week some old friends of my brother (different ones, not as bad) just came on over for an unannounced drive in our yard, to be confronted by myself and my little friend, and while their story was lacking, i felt they were not intending serious mischief so i released them without calling the police, but i seriously doubt they will ever come over unannounced again : )

Now since i’m not redneck enough to be sitting on my front porch with my assault rifle all the time, i decided a better alternative would be to set up a camera system. Wal-mart had a motion-activated-recording USB-connection wireless night vision camera system for $125. You could probably get one off eBay for half that price. I set it up facing out from the overhang of our garage, and now every anyone comes in the driveway or goes near the garage, i’ve got great video recordings on my hard drive, much better than any VHS based recording which would require constant tape switching.

    In summary:
You’re boned at the moment, but you can win if you catch him again. Report it to the cops so they know, but don’t expect it to go anywhere, but it’s the first step so do it. Next, set up a wireless night-vision camera to record based on motion near your car, to your computer. Astak makes great cameras. Next, piss of that mexican guy again on purpose. A better alternative is to just see him, and let him start the fights with you, so he gets pissed off but you aren’t officially considered instigating it. Next, just check the camera’s motion-detected recordings every day to see if he’s messed with your car (if he put something in the gas tank, you might not just notice it looking at the car!) and once you have that footage, he gets busted for that, and then hopefully for the prior thing as well, and you win! Then he has to pay you damages to replace whatever he broke! Okay yeah you gotta buy a camera but that’s reusable, for future security use.
