Is it easier/to get into the Police Dept or the Sheriffs Dept?

My girlfriend and I were having a discussion about the Police Dept and the Sheriffs Dept. She was saying she heard that it’s harder to get into the Sheriffs Dept, than the PD, that Sheriffs is stricter??? I’m wondering if both are the same to try to get into. Can anyone shed some light on this? I spoke to a friend of mine who’s a Sheriff and he told me that it’s pretty easy. Any feedback is appreciated : )
Additional info..we were discussing L.A. County

    This would vary from place to place and department to department. In the county that I live in the sheriff’s department is one of the lowest paying departments in the county. They are constantly losing deputies to municipal departments. However in a neighboring county, the opposite is true. This has a lot to do with the people running the individual departments; the sheriff, chief of police, and county or city elected officials.

    Sheriffs dept. is much easier to get into. Most PDS want college Grads.

    either way.you must complete the same requirements.i do not believe one is harder than the other. some sheriffs departments can be a little tougher than p.d.

    I have to assume you are talking about being a deputy (police) in the sheriff’s department. Sheriffs also run jails and provide security for local courts, these are not police jobs but are considered law enforcement.
    The Sheriff is an elected position. A sheriff in most cases has an easier time hiring and firing. I you are a friend of a sheriff, or can keep him getting elected, it would likely be easier for them to hire you.
    In most states you have to have passed some type of state test to be a police officer. The requirements for both are about the same. In LA it used to be, I don’t know currently, easier to be a sheriff’s police officer because they were a larger department.
