The Sheriff is elected, and is the primary law enforcement officer for the county.

Besides law enforcement, the Sheriff runs the county jail, and is responsible for civil and criminal paper service.

In our neck of the woods, the Sheriff is elected.
    His responsibilities are numerous.

Depends on the laws of your state. In my state, the state constitution provides for “Home Rule”, which means each county can decide how to elect or appoint a public official.

Some county’s elect the Sheriff, some counties the elected Commissioners (governing body) appoints the Sheriff.

It varies from state to state, but typically, a county sheriff is elected. Usually, the county sheriff is responsible for law enforcement in unincorporated areas of the county, although he technically has jurisdiction over the entire county, including incorporated municipalities. The sheriff also has civil law responsibilities and is typically responsible for providing courtroom security, and is in charge of the county jail (except in Kentucky, where county jails are under a separate official).
