Hello,
I want to apply for a CCW with the Orange County Sheriffs Dept. I am 24 years old and a Graduate Criminal Justice Student at CSULB (I realize I can’t bring a gun to school). I plan on going into law enforcement in the near future. I want to be issued a permit because I want to protection for myself as well as to be able to protect others until I can get a career in law enforcement which would probably a couple of years from now. I also work in a retail store which has been has had one armed robbery since I have worked there. I am also an Eagle Scout and I have always tried to follow the rule of “be prepared.” Anyway I was wondering if you could help me write a statement that would satisfy the OC Sheriffs Dept. reason section for issuance of a CCW permit. Thanks very much.

I have to be honest here. Your CCW will look “a little off” when you apply for your LEO job. I know it sucks, but it kind of gives that “gun nut” sense to the backgrounding psychologist. You’re better off without it.
I wish everyone could carry
As far as working in the store that gets robbed, you would need to find out if their policy covers you carrying under any circumstance. I doubt they want their employees armed.

Basically what you just told us in the question, they’re allvalid points. I don’t hink the Eagle Scout will pull any weight one way or another though. And rethink the wording of protect your family, it could be taken as vigilante style justice. As to the armed robbery, you could only use your gun if you or somebody else’s life was in Immediate harm. You can’t shoot them in the A$S as they’re running down the street no matter how tempting it is.

Orange County is actually one of the more liberal counties when it comes to issuing CCWs, but they don’t just issue to everyone like the rural agricultural counties do. You need to show them some evidence that you are at higher risk of gun-related crime than the average person. For example, you could say that you need to walk through dangerous areas alone late at night, you carry large amounts of cash, etc. Basically, what they are looking for is risk factors, something that makes you more vulnerable to crime that you could mitigate by carrying a gun.

Well when you work in retail stores and there is a certain amount of money around you daily that’s one reason they take into account when looking at your application. Get the job first and then apply.
Another good thing to do is to put this question in the hunting section. Also find the THR forum, become a member, and ask it there. A lot more people will be able to help you there.
Find the hunting section by going to sports then outdoor recreation. That’s where you should see hunting.
Just google search THR. Sorry if i couldn’t help you but the people on those sites can and will!
