A Ford pick-up truck crammed with up to 60 people believed to be undocumented immigrants, rolled over near Arizona City early Sunday morning, killing four and injuring 27.

About 25 of the passengers fled into the desert on foot and could not be found, said Pinal County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Vanessa White.

No arrests have been made and officers continue to search for the driver who fled the scene, according to reports. advertisement

Eighteen injured riders were flown and nine were taken on ground to local hospitals.

“They (the passengers) were all over the truck bed and on top of the cab,” White said.

Speed and alcohol are suspected factors for the rollover, according to reports.

The accident took place at around 5:30 a.m. near the rural country roads Sagittarius Street and Aries Drive, about 60 miles south of Phoenix.

All of the deceased were males, White said.

The Houston Police Department will not participate in a controversial immigration screening program, federal officials said on Friday, ending a months-long saga over the city’s plans.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials had designated this week as the national deadline for agencies to sign recently revamped agreements in order to participate in the federal government’s 287(g) program, which deputizes local law enforcement to act as immigration agents.

On Friday, ICE officials released a list of the 55 agencies that had signed formal agreements with ICE. A dozen agencies, including the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, had reached agreements with ICE, but still were awaiting approval from their governing bodies to sign off on the partnerships.

HPD was on a short list of a half-dozen agencies that either withdrew from negotiations or did not re-sign agreements with ICE, according to ICE officials. Carl Rusnok, an ICE spokesman, said on Friday that HPD had voluntarily withdrawn from 287(g), “as the program did not correlate with their specific law enforcement needs.”
Frank Michel, spokesman for Mayor Bill White, said he was unaware that ICE’s announcement was coming Friday. He said the city had not officially “withdrawn” from negotiations and never heard back from ICE on the city’s proposed changes to the standard agreement.

But the mayor has distanced himself publicly from 287(g) recently, saying negotiations with ICE had stalled and the program was not tailored to suit Houston’s needs.

This spring, after a Houston police officer was critically injured in a shooting by an illegal immigrant, White formally requested that Homeland Security officials expedite his request that the city participate in 287(g).

ICE announced in July that HPD was accepted to the program. But the city and ICE became deadlocked over a range of issues related to the program, from how it should be administered to which agency should shoulder the costs. Houston had wanted only serious criminals targeted, city officials said.

White, who is running for the U.S. Senate, earlier this month said ICE officials were “bureaucratic” in the negotiations, and appeared to be shying away from the program. White said he would prefer the city participate in another ICE program, called Secure Communities, which gives local law enforcement access to a massive immigration database to check suspects’ immigration history.

Michel said Friday the city was still interested in the Secure Communities program.

ICE’s announcement met with a mixed local reaction.

“I’m severely disappointed,” said Curtis Collier, the head of the Spring-based organization U.S. Border Watch. “The city was never really enthused about participating anyway.”

Cesar Espinosa, a Houston immigrant advocate who has organized protests against the program, said the announcement Friday “shows the fruit of the labor we’ve been doing for the past year or so, in terms of getting HPD not to sign onto 287(g).”

“To us, it’s only a confirmation of the fact that HPD and Mayor White have retracted their willingness to participate in the flawed 287(g) program,” Espinosa said.

But he said he was concerned that the Harris County Sheriff’s Office is still on the list of agencies working toward formal approval, saying “we’re mindful that the struggle at the county level is still very much alive.”

Illegals will not be subject to immigration screening in Houston no matter what the crime is, so if an illegal is wanted for a serious crime Houston cannot run any kind of background check on them at all ?

in california~San Diego county sheriffs showed up at a friends motel room, there was 4 over 18yrs of age females & my daughter & her friend are both 17 yrs old. I new she was going to be going with her friend to visit an old friend that was here for a few days visiting! Anyway~ my daughters father had sent her $400 and she had left $200 home, the deputy confiscated her cell phone and her $200 BUT didn’t give a reason why or didn’t write her a receipt for the money or cell. My daughter wasn’t arrested or detained, just basically ROBBED!This is actually the 2nd time they’ve confiscated money from her and she NEV ER got her money back the first time plus she had no proof that her money was confiscated! I thought that it was illegal for anyoneaffiliatedd with law enforcement to confiscate ANYTHING from ANYONE without giving them a receipt or something stating what was confiscated and why? Are they legally able to do this? And what can ?I do about this situation?

I went to the website but it doesn’t say what they are. I’m primarily interested in knowing the age requirements. If anybody could please help me out, that’d be great. BTW, I’m talking about the Los Angeles COUNTY SHERIFF”S DEPARTMENT, not the Los Angeles City Police Department. Just so you don’t get it confused. Thanks a lot.

Our house was forclosed on and sold at the sheriffs sale. Our mortage company has bought it and we have a 12 month redemption period. Are their lenders that will give us a loan to save the house?

ADELANTO • For the second time in two weeks, an illegal alien was arrested on suspicion of arson, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.

Deputy Roosevelt Dutra of the Adelanto sheriff’s station found the two vehicles on fire in the driveway of a residence in the 14600 block of Agave Way around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Dutra evacuated the home after the fire spread to the residence. He then used a garden hose to slow the fire until the San Bernardino County Fire Department arrived, sheriff’s officials said.

No one was injured, according to authorities.

Through an investigation, Dutra learned Noel Santiago, 23, was responsible for starting the fire, officials said.

Santiago was arrested for possession of a destructive device and booked at the Victor Valley Jail. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, authorities said.

Investigators later learned that Santiago is in the country illegally and Immigration and Naturalization Services had placed a hold on him, sheriff’s officials said.

This is the second illegal immigrant in less than three weeks to be arrested after allegedly setting fire to a vehicle in Adelanto. In February, illegal alien Hector Escobar, 38, was arrested for setting a Ford Expedition on fire on Palmdale Road. According to Pamela Hoffman, spokeswoman for the Adelanto station, the two arrests have no connection.

Do speeding tickets of the Bexar County Sheriff cost the same amount of money as tickets from city of San Antonio -SAPD?

Well a person pulled a gun on me in Calhoun County, MS to collect a dismissed debt, and the sheriff said he would pick the person up on the charges and investigate. The person was served papers, but it did not show up in the Calhoun County news paper. The Sheriff did not investigate the matter. Should the County Attorney file charges in the County or should he have file charged in Federal Court? What can be done about this matter? The County Attorney who filed for the dismissal of the debt said that he would subpoena the witnesses, but has not at this time and court is on 3/12. The witnesses do not want to act like they know anything now, but I have a surprise if I can get the witnesses in Court. What should I do? Should it really be in Federal Court?

I have a friend thats leaving town. He is a sheriff. I am looking for a blank sheriffs badge that is a nice size, that I could have something engraved on it. I would like to put a nice little saying on it. Please any ideas or suggestions as to where to look and how to look. Thanks

I want to apply for a CCW with the Orange County Sheriffs Dept. I am 24 years old and a Graduate Criminal Justice Student at CSULB (I realize I can’t bring a gun to school). I plan on going into law enforcement in the near future. I want to be issued a permit because I want to protection for myself as well as to be able to protect others until I can get a career in law enforcement which would probably a couple of years from now. I also work in a retail store which has been has had one armed robbery since I have worked there. I am also an Eagle Scout and I have always tried to follow the rule of “be prepared.” Anyway I was wondering if you could help me write a statement that would satisfy the OC Sheriffs Dept. reason section for issuance of a CCW permit. Thanks very much.
